Greece is one of the southern European countries. It is at the crossroads of three continents, namely Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. Bordering the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, between Albania and Turkey.

 

There are 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Greece and is ranked 16th in the world in terms of total sites. Greece is famous for ,The Acropolis,GReek Islands, Meteora, and most of all, Greek Food! Greece’s nickname is “Hellas”

The Greeks refer to their country as Hellas or Ellada and its official name is the Hellenic Republic. Greece is known for being the cradle of Western Civilization, the birthplace of democracy, the Olympic Games, and its ancient history and magnificent temples. Ancient temples in Greece include the Parthenon at the Acropolis in Athens, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion.

  1. Ancient Delphi

A religious sanctuary dedicated to the Greek god Apollo. It is home to Pythian Games which is the second most important game in  Greece after the Olympics. During the 1800s Delphi was declined due to the rise of Christianity and vanished under the site of a new village during those years.

 

Visitors Like us would walk along the sacred way as the sanctuary of Apollo which was then lined with treasures and votive monuments. This place was not only controlled by any greek, it was a sanctuary for all GREEKS as offerings to Apollo showing off their wealth and power. The temple of Apollo is the central and most important part of Delphi. This is where the athletic contests were held. Around the area of the sanctuary are cemeteries as well.

 

According to Greek MythologyZeus sent out two eagles, one to the east and the other to the west, to find the Navel of the World. the eagles met at the future site of Delphi- Zeus marked the spot with a sacred stone called, Omphalos (meaning navel), which was later held at the sanctuary of Apollo.

 

Delphi was considered by Greeks as the center (or navel) of the world.
